IOWA'S FIRST TRAIL CONNECTING TWO STATE PARKS
The Sauk Rail Trail has set a benchmark by demonstrating that rail trails can offer much more than just the conventional "beaten path." It is the first multi-purpose route in Iowa that connects two state parks at either end, with another conservation area situated in the middle. The trail spans 33 miles, running from Swan Lake State Park in Carroll to Blackhawk State Park in Lake View. It features a diverse landscape that includes natural prairies, wetlands, farmland, and timber areas, and is primarily built on an abandoned rail bed. The 13-mile central section of the trail, which runs from Maple River to Carnavon, follows a valley floor. Currently, the trail is paved from Swan Lake to Lake View.
